Immigration
They consider applications from those citizens who wish to come to the UK to work, do business, visit relatives, take a holiday or settle permanently.
Nationality
They will decide the applications from people who want to become British citizens.
Asylum
They determine all applications made from asylum seekers and granting refugee status to those whose fears of persecution are well founded and helping to integrate them swiftly into our society. They also run the National Asylum Support Service which provides accommodation and subsistence to all those destitute asylum seekers while their claims are being considered. Removing people from the UK when their claims fail is another priority.
Border control and entry clearance

The main types of employer sponsored UK work permit are:
- Tier 1 UK Work Permit - issued by Work Permits UK for professions that are on the Skills Shortage Occupation List. Tier 1 work permits in the UK require less evidence to be produced to prove that a person could not easily be found, as Work Permits UK have already recognised that there are a shortage of people in the UK with those skills.
- Tier 2 UK Work Permit - issued by Work Permits UK for those professions that do not fall into the Tier 2 Work Permit category.
- Training and Work Experience Scheme (TWES) - issued by Work Permits (UK) for the purposes of training an individual. This is a shorter term working permit and further information can be found on our TWES Work Permit Page.
- Intra-Company Transfer: issued by Work Permits (UK), this Working Permit is designed to allow overseas employers to bring key members of staff to their UK office.

Work Permits (UK) state that it is the responsibility of the employer to make sure that whoever they employ has the right to work in the UK, whether this is by way of an Employer Sponsored Work Permit, the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP), the Working Holidaymaker Visa, dependent of a work permit holder in the UK or by way of a variety of other visas that give the right to work in the UK.

Because the UK is suffering a shortage of engineering, mathmatic and physical science students at universities and skilled worker in the labour market, this new immigration category allows non-EEA nationals who have graduated from UK higher or further education establishments in certain maths, physical sciences and engineering subjects with a 2.2 degree or higher to remain in the UK for 12 months after their studies in order to pursue a career.
It may also be possible to apply under the Sectors Based Scheme whereby workers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to enter the United Kingdom to take short-term or casual jobs.
