Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme - Other Situations

If you have got your results, but are still waiting to graduate

All Applicants will have to be able to supply their degree certificate in order to show that they have successfully completed their course.

All those applicants who now have their result confirmed, but are still awaiting graduation, will have to provide a letter from their personal tutor confirming that they have completed the course at the required level and be able to provide the JACS code for the course.

Restrictions on paid work

There are no current restrictions on what type of paid work you can do as a Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme participant.

Switching into other employment categories

Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme participants can switch in-country into employment and self-employment categories as listed below:
  • Business person or
  • Innovators
  • Highly skilled migrant programme
  • Work permit employment
Providing they meet the requirements of the category.

Graduated from an approved course, and studied a PGCE

You will have to apply within one full year of graduating from the approved course; or else you will not be permitted to the one year of leave as a Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme participant.

Employment as a teacher

If it is the case that you have been offered employment as a teacher in the UK, you can ask your employer to apply for a work permit on your behalf. You can find Information on how to do this on the "Work Permits" section of this website.

If it is the case that you have leave as a student (and have successfully graduated) it will not be necessary for you to leave the UK to apply for leave to remain as a work permit holder.

Dependants

Spouses, unmarried partners and children of students can switch in line with the Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme applicant.

If they are applying from overseas, then they will have to apply for entry clearance.

Can I switch into the scheme without leaving the UK?

Applicants may switch onto the scheme in-country if they have valid leave as a student. This will include leave as a student, a student nurse, to re-sit an examination, or to write up a thesis. Otherwise you can apply to return to the UK from overseas under the scheme no later than one year after you complete your course. Entry clearance is mandatory for those returning to the UK under this scheme.

What type of work can I do?

There are currently no restrictions on the type of paid work you can do as a SEGS participant.

How long can I stay in the UK under the scheme?

You will be able to stay in the United Kingdom for up to a period of one year as a SEGS participant. We will count any time you spent outside the United Kingdom during that period as part of the year.

Can I switch into other employment categories?

SEGS participants are permitted to switch in-country into employment and self-employment categories (work permit employment, Highly Skilled Migrant Programme, business persons or Innovators), for as long as they meet the requirements of the category.

Can my dependants also stay in the UK?

Spouses, unmarried partners and children of students are permitted to switch in line with the SEGS applicant. If they are applying from abroad, entry clearance is compulsory.

This is a very new scheme and it is workable in many cases. It does not, however, lead nor contribute to a Permanent Residence and you will need to ask yourself what your ultimate goal is in the UK. Whatever that is, coddan-visa-permits.co.uk will be able to assist you by providing the advice that your need to make the correct decision for your future in the UK.
