UK Immigration - Scotland's Fresh Talent Scheme

Scotland's Fresh Talent Scheme

Since the summer of 2005, internationals students who have studied and graduated with a first degree, Masters, PhD or HND from a Scottish University or College, can apply to remain in Scotland to work and live under the Scotland’s fresh Talent Scheme for 2 years.

Who is eligible?

Students from outside the EEA (EU plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) are now eligible for this scheme. Remember that if you are a national within the EEA you don’t need a visa or work permit to come and work in the UK.

What about spouses and children?

If you are married and have children under 18, your dependents may be allowed to accompany you for the duration of your stay under this scheme. You are responsible for their financial welfare during your stay. You should know that your spouse will be allowed to get employment under the same conditions as dependents of people who hold work permit.

What happens after two years?

This Scheme is only for 2 years, so you will be expected to leave Scotland after this period. However you could apply under different immigration categories and obtain the right to remain for another 4 years. Also you may be entitled to a work permit because your skills are particularly needed in Scotland. These solutions could lead to a permanent residency.

What are some of the options for staying longer?

  • Work Permit Employment: if you have a job in Scotland and your employer cannot find anyone within the EEA to replace you when you leave. They might be able to obtain of work permit for you to remain in Scotland to work for them.

  • The Highly Skilled Migrant Program: This scheme applies to people who have particular skills, experiences and/or qualifications. It is aimed at attracting highly skilled professional in the UK or to become self-employed in Scotland.

  • Business Ownership: this is for people wishing to come to Scotland to invest at least £200,000 to set-up a new business or to take over a business. One of the requirements is for them to employed 2 people on a full-time basis.

  • The Innovators Scheme: This scheme applies to entrepreneurs with ideas for a new business in the UK. Their idea should bring economic benefit to the area. The applicant doesn’t have to be the investor but other people can finance their project.
