Eligible Programmes

Eligible Joint Honours Programmes

Your find most degree programmes will cover more than just one subject, for example 'Joint Honours' programme. Four possible patterns are recognized:
  1. Single-subject;
  2. Balanced two-subject combination;
  3. Major/minor two-subject combination;
  4. Balanced three-subject combination.
Your institution will have to report your programme to the Higher Education Statistics Agency according to the pattern that best matches it, and the match might not be exact. For example, if the second subject is a very small component, your programme will be reported as single-subject, and the test for eligibilitywill be based on that subject.

The following joint honours programmes are eligible for the Science and Engineering Scheme:
  • A balanced two-subject programme is eligible if one of the components is eligible, or if both are
  • A major/minor programme is eligible if the major component is eligible, or if both are.
  • A balanced three-subject programme is eligible if two of the components are eligible, or if all three are.
You will have to ask your academic tutor which pattern is being used to describe your programme, and the JACS code of each component.

Broadly Based Subject Group Programmes

Some programmes are broadly-based within a subject group, and will have a 'generic JACS code' such as F000 for Physical Sciences or H000 for Engineering.

Make sure your application for the scheme will be accompanied by an official letter from your institution certifying any of the following:
  • At least half of the material covered by the programme is eligible;
  • If either of these two generic codes is used for one or more components of a combination programme;
Unless the coding of other components already establishes eligibility.

Bachelor of Education Degree (BEd)

Integrated undergraduate programmes which lead to Qualified Teacher Status usually last for about four years and lead to the Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree.

These programmes are generally one-half teacher training, and one-half subject content.

One half teacher training is not eligible for the scheme.

One-half subject content. If the whole of the subject content is eligible then the programme will be eligible. The subject content may lie within a single JACS Principal Subject that is eligible, or may be split across more than one.

Not Eligible Programmes

If your programme is categorised as 'Other Undergraduate' you are not eligible regardless of the subject of your programme. This includes:
  • Higher National Certificates (HNC),
  • Higher National Diplomas (HND),
  • Diplomas in Higher Education (DipHE), and
  • Foundation Degrees.
