Doctors not from EU countries
Doctors from overseas who would like to work as doctors in the UK, need to be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). To be able to obtain limited registration they have to pass examinations set by the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB). You can apply for provisional registration if you have not yet completed the required 12 months internship in your home country or if you have completed your internship you can apply for full GMC registration Applications for Doctors from the EU it is quite easy.
An Application form for registration with the GMC can be downloaded directly from their website. Registration can take up to six months so do apply in plenty of time! The GMC website is at www.gmc-uk.org.
The Test consists of 2 parts:
Part 1: Clinical management and Science as applied to clinical problems.
Part 2: Clinical and communication skills, designed so that an examiner can observe you putting these skills into practice.
It will not be possible to enter part 2 until you have passed part1. You will have to take part 2 within three years of passing part 1. You will have to wait between four and six months between applying for and securing a place for the part 2 examination.
Before you can take the test you will have to:
- Have a primary medical qualification (PMQ) for limited registration as listed in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools.
- Be proficient in the English language (to at least 7 as an overall score in the IELTS Tests). You will have to contact the British Council in your country of residence, who administers this test.
- Be with at least 12 months’ postgraduate clinical experience in a teaching hospital, or another hospital which is approved by the medical registration authorities in the appropriate country.

Where to find Employment – hospital doctors are required in both NHS (public) hospitals and private hospitals.
Types of jobs - they will vary and will cover all grades and specialities from short, medium to low- term placements. You will find locum work is very popular and available UK wide. Accommodation is often provided free heavily subsidized by the hospitals for locum doctors.
Pay - Doctors' salaries vary according to experience, grade and specialty. To give you an idea an SHO working 56 hrs a week can expect to earn approx £850 to £950 pounds per week in the NHS. Private hospitals you can expect a salary for example, based on a contract of 26 weeks of around £48,000.
